Tarantino v. Gawker: Will the Fight Continue

In yet another twist of events, Quentin Tarantino has dismissed – without prejudice – his recently amended copyright infringement lawsuit against Gawker. Tarantino initially sued Gawker in January for alleged contributory copyright infringement, asserting that Gawker improperly provided a link to Tarantino’s script for “The Hateful Eight”. Although the case was initially dismissed because it lacked factual support, the court gave Tarantino until May 1 to re-file.

On May 1, Tarantino filed the amended complaint and provided additional support for his assertions of contributory infringement. Additionally, Tarantino asserted that Gawker illegally downloaded an unauthorized copy of the screenplay and therefore directly infringed on Tarantino’s copyright.

A week after filing the amended complaint, and before Gawker could file its answer, Tarantino dismissed the lawsuit. Tarantino has, of course, left open the possibility of filing his claims for copyright infringement at a later date.
