Additional $290 Million Awarded to Apple in Samsung Retrial

On Thursday, November 21, 2013, a jury awarded Apple an additional $290 million in damages arising out of patent litigation. Last year, a jury found Samsung had infringed Apple's patents and awarded Apple over $1 billion in damages. The judge later vacated $450 million of the original damages award over concerns about the jury's method of calculating damages. During retrial on the vacated damages amount, Apple argued it was owed $379 million in additional damages, while Samsung argued it should only owe $52 million. After 1 week of trial and 3 days of deliberation, the jury returned its verdict, awarding Apple less than it requested. Apple and Samsung remain embroiled in ongoing patent litigation. The ITC recently banned Apple and Samsung products from the United States over patent infringement concerns. The Obama administration vetoed the ban on Apple's products but did not overturn the ban on certain Samsung products. Apple and Samsung are currently set for another trial this Spring involving different patents and products.
