Finally a cure for gray hair? You may want to hold your breath.

L’Oreal has filed a patent application covering a ‘secret potion’ to prevent gray hair. The formula is thought to be derived from previous research into the use of a certain fruit to encourage the growth of pigment-producing cells called melanocytes. Unfortunately, a veritable Fountain of Youth it is not. First, the head of L’Oreal’s hair care unit claims the formula won’t reverse the graying process, but rather prevent it. Second, one would ideally have to use the treatment on a daily basis to continue to ward off a head full of salt instead of pepper. Third, and possibly the most commercially unviable aspect, the formula contains putrecine, a compound responsible for odors resembling bad breath or rotting fish. I for one won’t be on the pre-order list.
