Yes, Your Internet Connection Really Has Been Slower Lately

You may have noticed your internet connection slowed down this week. It wasn't your imagination. Internet speeds around the world have decreased lately because of a massive distributed denial of service - or DDoS - attack. Some people are claiming it's the biggest cyber-attack in history. The attacks were focused on a called Spamhaus, which operates a domain name system. The DNS is like a telephone directory for internet addresses. When you type in a website name in the address bar of your browser, the requested name is compared to a list of known names and the unique IP address of the host server is returned. Instead of remembering the unique IP address for a popular website, the DNS allows you to simply remember the web address.

A DDoS attack occurs when multiple computers maliciously target specific servers with traffic in an effort to overwhelm the server and make it unreachable through the internet. The attacks began as a result of Spamhaus' decision to block a Dutch web host called Cyberbunker in an effort to eliminate spam email originating from Cyberbunker servers.
