Three Tips on How to Stand Out During the Job Hunt
Make sure you present your best self when applying for a job. Try these three easy tips to successfully navigate the job hunt.
Do your Research
When I review resumes, it really stands out to me when an applicant has done the research on our firm. Not only do they know about our business and culture, but they sound like they are genuinely excited about what we have to offer. Mentioning how your skills will work well within the company and contribute to the business helps those reviewing resumes see what you can bring to the table.
Write a Cover Letter
People seem to think that cover letters are not read by employers, and therefore would rather not go through the effort of putting it together. That could not be farther from the truth. Cover letters tell those reviewing your application who you are, what you have to offer, and where you are going. It also tells the employer about your professional demeanor, and can explain any confusion or gaps on your resume. I usually can get a sense about someone’s passion for the position or their interests from reading a well-written cover letter.
Appreciate, Appreciate, Appreciate
Thank you notes go a long way in my world. It’s become a bit of a lost art form, but I think that the simple act of appreciation speaks volumes. Whether it is the recruiter who brought you in, an HR generalist who coordinated interviews, or an executive that interviewed you, showing appreciation for their time is important. Gratitude is important in any company culture, and it shows a commitment to core values and the well being of the team around you. Thank you notes not only speak to your personal strengths and emotional intelligence, but also to your professional strengths and how you will treat your team and clients.
