“Finding Your Second Wind in Life and Law”

The National Task Force on Lawyer Well-Being recently recommended that one of the important things law firms and organizations can do, to foster and build lawyer well-being, is to train lawyers how to be more resilient. If resilience is a person’s capacity for stress-related growth, research on lawyers across the country shows that our profession struggles more than others with this trait. Primary causes are said to be: taking criticism personally, being overly defensive and resistant to feedback, and lacking a positive outlet for stress. Clint Schumacher, practicing lawyer and author of Second Wind - Decisions the Resilient Make to Overcome Adversity, will discuss applied practices and routines that we can all use to help build more personal resilience.

“The Ethics of Punishment – Intoxication Manslaughter”

What are the ethical considerations for setting punishment in a criminal case? Do the Texas Disciplinary Rules of Professional Conduct offer any guidance? Led by practicing lawyers Messina Madson and Kendall Castello, our CLE attendees will serve as prosecutor, defense attorney, judge, and jury, as we examine punishment in an intoxication manslaughter case involving a 19-year-old defendant.

Ethics CLE Speakers’ Bios

Clint Schumacher, at Dawson & Sodd LLP, is a husband, father, lawyer, and football coach. He is passionate about building teams that are resilient, engaged, and motivated. He has the unique experience of working both to solve complex legal problems and coaching young athletes to succeed. Clint focuses his litigation practice on eminent domain and government taking litigation and counseling, as well as other high-stakes litigation matters. He has been granted the exclusive designation of Counselor of Real Estate due to his skill in leading clients through dicult real estate problems. He has also been recognized as Texas Super Lawyer and a D Magazine Best in Dallas. Clint has completed a marathon, climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge, given two TEDx talks, won a bellyflop contest, and finished deep in the money at the World Series of Poker. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Abilene Christian University in Accounting and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin. Messina Madson and Kendall Castello served at the highest levels of the Dallas DA’s Office before becoming partners in criminal defense at Madson Castello Law. With more than 30 years of combined experience, they help people navigate the criminal justice system with empathy and skill. They’ve tried more than 300 cases to a jury, ranging from drug and domestic violence cases to capital murder and sex crimes.

Messina has tried some of the highest-profile criminal defense cases in the DFW area. In early 2020, she made the front page of The Dallas Morning News as the lead defense attorney for an ex-police officer, found not guilty in a fatal, officer-involved shooting. As former Acting DA in Dallas County, she helped create the nation’s largest DA-driven diversion unit. Messina received her undergraduate degree from the University of Tulsa and a Juris Doctor from the SMU Dedman School of Law.

Kendall, as managing partner, steers the firm’s vision of “helping good people with criminal issues.” Client reviews have lauded him as a lawyer of “impeccable skill” and “integrity above reproach.” With 17 years of experience in criminal law, Kendall also served as the Administrative Chief of the Dallas DA’s office. Kendall graduated from the SMU Dedman School of Law after receiving a BA with honors in Biblical text from Abilene Christian University.
