Communicate With Confidence: Tips for Productivity in the Workplace

While it’s meant to be a quick laugh, I think this cartoon has some truth in the workplace, and even outside of it. I find that there is sometimes a tendency to over explain or be unnecessarily apologetic in communications, and that can drag down productivity in the workplace. While the intention is to be respectful and polite, it can come across as a lack of confidence, particularly with those that are newer to the workforce.

The truth is that we can still be respectful without apologizing for our thoughts. It’s a subtle change in the way we communicate that comes across as more assertive and confident. Instead of saying things like “I just think...,” say “I think…,” and instead of using qualifiers like “possibly, but, kind of, maybe, etc.,” state your point directly, without softening your position. Also, try to do it succinctly.

The more simple and brief we can make our communications; the more easily it will be understood, and likely respected. We don’t take offense to our bosses being direct about their opinions, so why would they be offended by ours?
