The Business Case for the Practical Joke
We’ve had a long tradition of playing practical jokes on new employees as part of the on-boarding process. A standard one is to provide them with an onerous form to fill out that leads to a nearly impossible process to complete with several touch points along the way with various people at the firm. An element of urgency helps speed the joke along. Over the years, we’ve kept a collection of the best responses to review. In fact, we even include some of those in our “Green Guide,” which is our statement of culture. There are many books written on employee engagement — what it is, how to get it, and why engagement leads to better business performance. We’ve found that a well executed practical joke as part of a tradition leads to a sense of camaraderie and engagement. This is also consistent with our core value of passion. Obviously, all cultures are unique, so this may not work in every environment.
