Facebook Takes a Stand Against Fake “Likes”

You may have noticed that many Facebook pages, such as Lady Gaga and The Simpsons, seemed to have lost tens of thousands of fans overnight. That’s because Facebook has begun its siege against fake accounts and “likes” by removing them from the site. As part of its improvements to site integrity systems, Facebook has increased automated efforts to identify and delete fake “likes.” Facebook has stated that Facebook pages that have been abiding by the company’s rules should expect no more than a 1% drop in its “likes,” which so far seems to be the norm. Zynga’s Texan HoldEm Poker page has lost approximately 200,000 “likes” which only represents about 0.3% of the more than 65 million “likes.” Lady Gaga lost 66,000 “likes” and The Simpsons lost about 21,000 “likes,” but these drops similarly represent less than 1% of each page’s total “likes.”

The site is more focused on weeding out “likes” that have been gained by malware, compromised accounts, deceived users or purchased bulk likes to prevent the false public perception such “likes” may create. With the rapid evolution of technology, purchasing “likes” or even YouTube views is as easy as Googling a site that offers such services, selecting the number of “likes” or views you want and paying the specified amount.
